It's game day. The JV game tips at 5:30. Your sophomore guard, the one you're counting on next year, plays 22 minutes. How much of those 22 minutes do you actually know?
For most programs, the answer is a scorebook, a few phone clips, and the JV coach saying, "He looked good." JV coaches don’t always have the data they need to highlight a player's performance. They're working with a clipboard, a short bench of volunteers, and no time.
JV is where your pipeline gets built, and it's the part of your program with the least film and the fewest numbers behind it. Varsity gets breakdowns, review sessions, and stats.

Players can't fix what they can't see. A JV guard might think he's a mid-range scorer. His shot chart might say otherwise. When every stat is supported with a game clip, a coach can show a turnover, not just talk about one.
Call-ups shouldn't start from zero. When JV runs on the same breakdowns as varsity (possession types, shot charts, plus-minus, points per possession by play type), a player who moves up already speaks your language. He already knows how to read his own film.
Roster decisions get easier. By the time a JV player is up for a varsity spot, you have a season of film and numbers on him, not a memory of one good night in February. The numbers don't replace your judgment. They back it up.
Basketball is one of the most comprehensive breakdowns in MaxPreps Advantage, and your JV team can use it. For basketball, that means:

JV already has free access to basic film tools: clip trimming, playlists, and telestration. Advanced Breakdowns adds what takes the hours: automatic stat tagging, stat-linked clips, and basketball analytics.
Free basic editing tools (clip trimming, playlists, telestration) are available to your JV team now.
Keep it to one thing at a time: shot charts for your guards, rebounding for your bigs.
Give each player a few clips to review and see who watched.
Take 15 minutes with your JV coach. Who's earning a look?
For NFHS Network games, film auto-imports within 30 minutes of the stream ending, and stats and breakdowns are typically ready within 8-12 hours.
Advanced Breakdowns is $600 per team, per season. For an NFHS Network school, the film is already in your library. The numbers don't replace your read on a player. They back it up, and they give JV a record of the work.

Storage is unlimited. Film everything, keep everything, delete nothing. That adds value to JV film. . A freshman's first JV season doesn't disappear at the end of the year. It stays in your library next to his sophomore film, and his junior film, and so on. By the time he's a senior, you have years of film and stats showing how he's grown, and he can see it too.
When it's time to decide who gets a bigger role, you're not working from memory. You're working from a record. And your players see their own progress, which is the best argument for putting in the work.
Your varsity program is only as deep as the JV program feeding it. If your best development tools stop at the varsity bench, you're coaching half your pipeline on instinct.
Preseason is the easiest time to change that. Set JV up before the first game and you have the whole season of film behind every player in your program.
