In Dylon Melby’s time at North Star Schools in Gildford, Montana, he discovered his passion for videography with the NFHS Network. He had the opportunity to produce broadcasts for his high school athletic events and gained real-world experience in filmmaking and journalism.

Interview with Dylon Melby of North Star Schools
The NFHS Network School Broadcast Program provides high school students with the opportunity to livestream their own broadcasts of high school sporting events. The program also gives students hands-on experience on the production side of the broadcasts and teaches many other transferable skills.
“I’ve gotten a lot of leadership and problem-solving experience. As I’ve grown older in the program, I’ve also gotten to teach more people how [to broadcast].”
In our recent interview, Melby mentioned how some of his favorite memories during his time in the program were broadcasting division basketball tournaments. The NFHS Network gave Dylon the opportunity to broadcast highly anticipated basketball tournaments that attracted large audiences. These big stages create memories for the players, families, fans, and broadcasters alike.
The program has helped Melby personally in many ways, and his high school as a whole has also benefited greatly. With a total class of 52 students, Melby reflects on how a school of this size wouldn’t usually have a broadcast program. Because of the NFHS Network, he and his classmates have had an avenue to be a part of something great.
“I think that it helps us a lot because it helps people get involved. It’s gotten this recognition, a lot of people like how we do it.”
Melby has been able to grow even closer with his classmates through this initiative. He has also identified his career interests and developed valuable skills that will stay with him for the rest of his life. Now that he has graduated, he is attending film school in Chicago and hopes to become a director one day.
“I think that’s a really important program to have in a school. Especially one as small as that… Without the program, I probably wouldn’t know what I want to do after high school at this point, but it just kind of helped me find out what I was interested in.”
